8 Tips to make your next pet session a breeze!
01.
Relax
There's no need to worry about the posing or location. I have that all under control! The location we choose is carefully hand selected to achieve the best photos possible. Posing will be limited at first as I like to capture the natural essence of you and your pet.
02.
Outfits
When thinking about what you may wear to your session take into consideration the location the weather, and the style of the session. If we are hiking a mountain in the middle of December you won't want to be in dress and heels. Comfortability & Confidence are key! If you need any help picking out outfit definitely browse Pinterest or reach out I'd love to help!

03.
Hair, Make-up, & Nails
Keep it simple! You want these photos to look like you not someone you hardly recognize. Do your everyday make-up or if you don't usually wear any try just a little bit of mascara to make your eyes pop! Same with your nails. Try to keep them simple or match the color scheme you've chosen for your outfits. (Stay away from any neon colors) For your hair try to keep it simple. Find ways to wear it down or half up half down. The movement looks great in photos!

04.
Four-Legged Friend Prep
Outdoor Animals
Prep your animal the day of the session. If weather allows (given we live in New England) give them a full spa day, from head to tail. (recruit a friend if you can so you can get ready at the same time.) They should be show ready. Mane & tail brushed and or braided, bathed, brushed, hooves cleaned, and polished. Feel free to bring different tack and or other props you may want included. (Ex. Saddle, Bridle, Flower crown, halter)
Indoor Animals
Depending on your pet schedule a grooming appointment for 1-3 days before your session. If your pet has long fur around their eyes be sure to have that trimmed back. We want to see their eyes! Avoid any drastic haircuts super close to the session. We want to recognize your pet when these photos are posted or hung in your house! Feel free to bring any props you may want to include! (Ex. Fashion collars, bandanas, coats, their favorite toy.)
05.
Exercise
Take your pet on a long walk, run, or ride right before your session to get any excess energy out. We want them to be kind of tired but not totally wiped out. The zoomies are great and all but we want more than just running pictures!

06.
Get Your Pet Acclimated
Tips 5 & 6 can go hand in hand. Try to get to the location at least 30 minutes early to let your animal get used to the area. This will likely be a new place for them and even if its not they will still want to smell all the smells and check everything out. Its best for the photos if they do most of their exploring ahead of time. If you have a super nervous pet try to bring them to the location a couple of times before the session so they are more comfortable with the area. If your pet is afraid of strangers we will be sure to allow extra time for them to get used to me before we get started!

07.
To Leash or Not to Leash
This is a highly debated topic amongst pet owners alike. I leave this one up to the discretion of the owner as well as the locations leash laws. If your dog does not do well off leash it is best for the leash to be left on during the session. (If the session is in a studio we can definitely give no leash a try!) Some locations require pets to be kept on a leash at all times, if this is the case I will be sure to let you know ahead of time. If you are using a leash it is preferred that it is a solid neutral color. (Black, grey, tan, brown, leather think about what colors would go well with your home décor if you will be printing these out.) If you are using a fashion leash for some of the pictures that is fine.

Bribes & Helpers
Bring bribes and a helper if needed! Not all dogs will listen without treats let alone listen to a stranger with no treats. Be sure to bring their favorite snack or reward. Helpers are always welcome a helper would be someone that already knows the dog and has a good connection with them or one of my recommendations down below offers special services to my clients specifically. (See below to check out the services Emma with Port City Paws offers.) The helper would be there to help tame the pet, direct them when you're unable to, hold the leashes and props, or keep them smiling for pictures.
